Generic objectives
Offer advanced training in public policy aimed at the development of
O1 - a systemic understanding of the scientific domain of public policy, namely its European and international dimensions;
O2 - an updated knowledge of the analytical perspectives, concepts, theories and problems in multidisciplinary studies in public policy;
O3 - skills to design and operationalize comparative models in this area;
O4 - skills to undertake a relevant research pursuing high levels of academic quality and integrity;
O5 - ability to communicate to the academic community and society as a whole about the scientific area of public policy;
O6 - ability to intervene knowledgeably in terms of public policy design, management and evaluation, both at the national and European and international levels.
Learning outcomes
When completing their degree, students are expected to be able to:
LO1 - Identify and evaluate the main analytical models , conceptual frames and methodological strategies in the public policy scientific domain;
LO2 - articulate theoretical and methodological tools in the completion of relevant and quality research in thea area of public policy;
LO3 - operationalize and apply that knowledge to the design, analysis, management and evaluation of public policy both at national and European and international levels;
LO4 - Communicate and disseminate the results of their work in the academic community and to society in general.
In each curricular unit these objectives are operationalized and measured with the use of specific tools. During the first years students attend six compulsory seminars focused on the study of theories and methodologies in public policy, as well as two other optional courses that cover a variety of public policy areas: social policies, defense and foreign policy, education, health, environment, migrations, media, science and technology, energy and development (60 credits, ECTS). The remaining two years are devoted to students preparation of the thesis, developing their research at CIES-IUL (120 credits, ECTS). Additionally, they attend a research seminar, an international cycle of conferences in Public Policy and the Forum of Public Policy. The completion of the thesis and its defense operationalize all those competences and skills and provide the opportunity for a comprehensive evaluation and measurement.
