Generic objectives

The general objectives of the ISCTE-IUL PhD Programme in Sociology are:

a) To train researchers, higher education teaching staff and other highly qualified professionals in the analysis of social problems

b) To offer the PhD candidates an advanced theoretical and methodological training in sociology, in addition to an in-depth knowledge of sociological research at the national and international levels

c) To guarantee that, throughout the study programme, the PhD training takes place in a real research environment, which depends on the close connection between the PhD programme and the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL), the body responsible for its scientific coordination and day-to-day management

d) To contribute to the internationalisation of Portuguese sociology, by attracting foreign PhD candidates and receiving international professors and researchers to cooperate in the PhD activities

Learning outcomes

Holders of a PhD degree in sociology from ISCTE-IUL should attain the following objectives:

a) Have the capacity to develop a systematic comprehension of the scientific field of sociology

b) Possess the research competencies, skills and methods associated with sociology

c) Have the ability to design, draft and carry out an original sociological investigation with scientific quality

d) Be able to analyse, critically assess, and succinctly sum up new and complex ideas

e) Be able to communicate with their scientific peers and the community in general on their scientific field and publish their scientific work

f) Be able to make a contribution, within an academic and professional context, to aims involving the social progress and welfare of populations

The study programme includes operational methods, content and procedures that guarantee the attainment of these objectives:

i. It is an integrated programme and is scientifically coordinated by a research centre of excellence in the field of sociology (CIES-IUL)

ii. It contains an initial year of training in which the PhD candidates acquire advanced sociological skills on a theoretical, methodological and technical level and a knowledge of the state of Portuguese and international sociological research

iii. It includes a "Sociological Research Project Seminar", in which the students begin to create a plan for their PhD theses, which is then drafted with the support of a supervisor and submitted for formal approval, on the basis of a report by two specialists

iv. It includes a "Doctoral Seminar for Sociological Research", which supports the development of the thesis project that has been approved. In this seminar, once again, the students present and discuss their work before other students and a wider public of professors and researchers

v. It guarantees the supervision of the PhD thesis projects by experienced researchers belonging to CIES-IUL or other research units

vi. It puts the students in contact with prominent international and Portuguese researchers by means of the annual conferences programme for PhD students

Designed For

To be eligible to apply for the degree of doctorate in Sociology, candidates must:
a) Be holders of a master degree or legal equivalent;
b) Hold a bachelor degree, as well as an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, acknowledged as attestable of capacity for the realization of this study cycle;
c) Have an especially relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum, acknowledged as attestable of capacity for the realization of this cycle of studies .
