Objectives In democratic regimes, elections are the quintessential mechanism for communicating citizens? preferences and holding politicians accountable. Also, citizens? participation in the political process is a sine qua non.  From these points of departure, the course is structured into two parts. The first part includes models of electoral behaviour, the paradoxes of turnout and information, and basic attitudes toward democracy. In the second part, the focus is on  voting and party competition. The cleavage model and several dimensions of identification and competition are presented.

Evaluation Method a) Assiduousness and participation in the lessons (15%) and in the Doctoral Conferences in Political Science (10%);
b) a spoken presentation of one or more topics of the plan by a small group (however with individual mark) (25%);
c) a written essay in which the students will try to structure a research project, falling upon the revision of the literature on the matter (50%).
Exam: for those who do not comply with the previous norms.
Teaching Method The course will entail four types of activities:

1st.  Theoretical and empirical presentations by the Professors;

2nd.  Presentations by the students;

3rd.  Tutorial assistance by the Professors to the students;

4th.  Attendance to open seminars (advised by the Professors) concerning the topics of the course, namely the Cycle of (doctoral and non-doctoral) Political Science Conferences at ISCTE-IUL.
