Objectives
The main goal of Macroeconomics is that students understand the functioning of a market economy (markets and policy institutions) from a macroeconomic perspective. The emphasis is on short-run fluctuations of an open economy.
Program
1. Introduction to Macroeconomics 2. Measuring Macroeconomic Aggregates 3. The production function, productivity and employment 4. Saving and investment in closed and open economies 5. Goods market equilibrium and the IS function 6. The money market and the MP curve 7. Money supply 8. Aggregate supply and the Phillips curve 9. Aggregate demand and aggregate supply 10. Macroeconomic policy and the AD-AS model 11. The AD-AS model and the zero lower bound 12.Exchange rates and international economic policy
Evaluation Method
Performance evaluation is an on-going activity as the term progresses and includes the following elements: o a mid-term test accounting for 40% of final grade o two online assignments accounting for 5% of final grade o one final test accounting for 55% of final grade Each test mark cannot be below 8/20.
Teaching Method
During the term each student should acquire analytical, information gathering, written and oral communication skills. The following learning methodologies (LM) will be put in practice: 1. Expositional, to the presentation of the theoretical reference frames 2. Participative, with analysis and resolution of application exercises 3. Active, with the realization of individual quizzes and homework assignments Self-study, related with autonomous work by the student.
Observations
Students are expected to participate actively throughout the semester. This means reading class materials, solving problem sets, and complying with the course evaluation. The e-learning webpage contains the lecture notes and assignments for this course. The webpage is permanently updated with news from the course allowing students to keep track with the course main activities.
