Objectives This course aims to provide a comprehensive view of the History of the Portuguese overseas expansion, by emphasizing the global and enduring nature of Portuguese overseas empire and its role in the making of the early modern world. Beginning in about 1415 and concluding in early nineteenth century, the program encompasses the study of the geographical extent and interconnectedness of Portuguese overseas empire, its political, social and economical dimensions, along with its cross-cultural achievements.

2. The origins of Portuguese expansion.
3. Portuguese expansion in Africa and the Atlantic in the 16th century.
4. The discovery of the sea: shipping and astronomical navigation.
5. Portuguese settlement in the 16th-century Brazil.
6. Creating an empire in Asia.
7. Institutions of government and trade.
8. The Portuguese Empire in crisis: the Dutch, English and Asian challenges (1600-1665). The Far East solution.
9. The reshaping of Portuguese empire in Asia in late 17th century and 18th century.
10. The making of an Atlantic empire in the 17th and 18th centuries:

11. Portuguese society in Africa, Asia and Brazil: a comparison.
12. Race relations in the Portuguese empire
Evaluation Method There are two systems of evaluation:
1. Periodic assessment: Attendance and class participation (10%); written and oral presentation of a research essay (40%); final written test (50%).
2. Final exam (100%)
